Diet and Nutrition for Men

Diet & Nutritional information can sometimes be confusing to many of us. Sometimes the messages are mixed as to what are good or bad for your body. Sometimes the information does not relate to your needs as the examples provided- identify food-groups that seem expensive, unavailable or unreachable. It is our intention to provide diet and nutrition guidelines that are simple, inexpensive, easy to understand and access.

Folic acid

Folic acid is the synthetic (man-made) form of the B vitamin foliate. The form of the vitamin that is naturally present in foods is called foliate.

Men, do you need folic acid? The answer is yes. Why? - Because, it is simple prevention.

Research demonstrates that suitable folic acid consumption in men (400 mg/a day, RDA 2001), helps to diminish the risk of suffering from colon cancer by 50 %. In addition to helping maintain clean arteries, it helps to improve the memory and to conserve your spermatozoa - powerful vigour, among other things. You can naturally obtain this vitamin with regular consumption of green leafed vegetables like lettuce and spinach as well as whole grains, like kidney beans.

Fibre

Why I must consume fibre? After all, what is fibre? It is simple guys - fibre is a very important nutrient that although, is not digested by the body, is necessary to maintain several of its working (corporal) functions, in an efficient form.

Two types of fibre exist: soluble and the insoluble type. The soluble fibre, which is found in foods like oats, barley, nuts, seeds and kidney beans, is digested in the short intestine, delaying, and allowing the body to absorb more nutrients. Whereas the insoluble fibre, which is in wheat, vegetables and grains, helps us accelerate the journey in the heavy intestine, with which we reduce the time that injurious or toxic substances delay in the intestines and helps prevent colon cancer. Fibre is also found in cereals, fruits and vegetables.

We should consume from both fibres 25 to 35 grams daily, because in addition to preventing colon cancer, they also help lower the diabetes incidence in us and help reduce the risks of suffering cardiovascular diseases, because it lowers the cholesterol levels in the blood.
