  • Please be informed that VCT access is available to the public of Barbados through the eight (8) polyclinics - primary health care facilities- that service the island
  • VCT services may also be provided by the Public Health Nurse in the polyclinics. Persons are advised to call the clinics to make an appointment to see the VCT counsellor.
  • In addition, VCT is also offered, on request at public events/activities including church and other community meetings. This service is usually offered at the time and place requested by various organisations and groups, as long as the venue is deemed appropriate for this function.

Belize

VCT and Treatment Access:

VCT Notes: Persons are advised to call in advance for VCT appointments

Treatment Notes:

Treatment is monitored by two persons in the country Dr. Ken and Dr. Arriaga. Dr. Arriaga volunteers his time at KHMH in the Belize District while Dr. Ken works in the south at the Southern Regional Hospital. 

  • For the others there are point persons who draw blood to check side effects on liver etc. The regiments mentioned are changed accordingly to address side effects.
  • Meds can be picked up at all Centres, but many persons prefer to collect their meds outside their district.

CD4 testing- Free testing is located in all 6 districts of the country

Viral Load Testing - As a matter of practice there is very little viral testing done because of cost which may run about $900 Belize dollars per person.

Diet & Nutrition guidelines - Nutritional Booklets are given out in the system, but follow-up support barely exists.  For mothers who breastfeed, the Ministry of Health provides two cans of milk, but if the child uses more, the parent must cover the cost.

ARV’s are given to pregnant women who are infected and programs of testing mothers exist to that process of medication treatment.

Dominica

In Dominica the site of the clinic is not advertised so as to discourage nosey parkers! However it is integrated with other services in such a way as to protect attendee’s confidentiality. The nominated physician is also prepared to see people by appointment in other venues. There is no charge for these services. Medication and condoms are available via the government pharmacies without cost or discrimination.

Treatment Notes:

Clinic can provide free ARV meds and some Opportunistic Infection (OI) meds

- CD4 testing is sent out of state.

- No viral load at present

VCT and Treatment Access: National AIDS Program Office 

VCT is available and appointments with the Clinic can be made. 

The National AIDS program has a psychologist, counsellor, social worker, nurse educator and several other staff members. They run a food bank and can introduce individuals to local support groups and other resources. They run workshops and educational sessions and provide condoms at public events.

Life Goes On Integrated Care Centre

  • VCT is available both in the Centre Chat room; by arrangement at anonymous venues; and appointments with the Clinic. Transportation and company can be provided. Condoms and literature are available.
  • The Confidential Clinic can provide free testing and re- testing, free ARV meds, some OI meds, CD4 testing (sent out of state), No Viral Load at present.
  • Life Goes On is staffed by volunteers, all its members are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Some health professionals are included. Life Goes On provides home care services including Meals on Wheels, a Dial A Ride Adapted bus service, A Hotline Listening Service, Red Ribbon Jewellery Workshop, a Support group and Adherence counselling.
  • Life Goes On has volunteer nurses, counsellors, doctors and lawyers available by appointment.
